The push for complete legalization of recreational marijuana use continues to rise in the United States. While 33 states have legalized use for medicinal purposes, only 14 of those states allow recreational usage. As the push grows greater and the data is showing that the benefits out-weigh previously thought risks, full legalization remains in sight and no longer a pipe dream.
Slow changes are happening even across states that have yet to legalize its recreational usage. Many employers are already changing their drug testing policies to no longer include marijuana as one of their indicators.
Marijuana Already in the Mainstream
Many cultures have been using forms of marijuana for centuries and has been adapted into the United States to help people suffering from seizures and the pain of cancer. Not only is it widely accepted for these specific ailments, it is also highly effective. The progression of the use of cannabidiol, most commonly referred to as CBD, has showed it being effective in treating a whole range of issues and diseases.
Many US politicians are in full favor of not only legalizing all uses of marijuana, but also expunging all records of procession of the drug that could be holding someone back from employment or housing. The legalization of this goes far beyond just the available usage.
Why is Medical Marijuana So Important?
CBD is already being sold in many forms. These creams, pills, oils, sprays and edibles can help people who suffer from chronic pain, anxiety and can even help to combat depression. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, more than 40 million people suffer from either anxiety or depression or both. Offering an easy, legal solution to help them manage the effects with little to no side effects would reduce the need for over prescribing medications that need to be taken daily and cannot be stopped without a fear of significant negative consequences to the body and the person.
While the positive attributes of CBD usually greatly outweigh the negatives, it is always important to discuss its usage with a medical marijuana expert as there are many studies about how it interacts with other prescription drugs. Also, if shown effective, it could reduce the need for some of the prescription drugs it replaces.
The Future of CBD
Considering the explosion of CBD products and usage in America over the past few years, it is very likely that the increased research and legalization will continue its rapid growth. Not only are physicians beginning to regularly prescribe usage, veterinarians are also seeing the positivity in helping animals deal with pain and anxiety.
Because of the positivity our population is experiencing with medical cannabis, continued prescriptions, usage and legalizations are likely to continue in the same rapid fashion they are occurring in now.
Medical marijuana was legalized in Florida in 2016 when it was approved by voters. If you are looking for assistance in obtaining a medical marijuana card, or simply need more information on how cannabis can help with your chronic condition, call Dr. Stein at Neurology of Cannabis in Sarasota.
